Dear Colleague,

Weare pleased to invite you on behalf of the Sultan Qaboos University (College ofArts & Social Science and Medical library), Royal Hospital Medical library,Oman Medical Specialty board and Special Libraries Association (Arabian GulfChapter) to attend a symposium to be held in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman duringthe period 13-14th February, 2013 titled “Health informationUnder Microscope: Challenges & Solutions”. The symposium is structuredin a practical focus as it provide rich training program to insure thatattendees will gain required skills for their professional life.

Thesymposium composed of four main parts:

1.     Group  discussion of key issues in the field ofmedical information through papers presentations

2.     Workshops

3.     Tutorials

4.     Trainingthe trainer

 

v Workshops  Descriptions

 

1.     Linkout: Connecting pubmed, libraries and Community, Speaker:Holly Ann Burt, MLIS, AHIP, a medical librarian employed by the University ofIllinois at Chicago (UIC).

This workshop will provide users with links from PubMed toonline resources including publications, databases and consumer healthinformation.  It examines the steps in the process of activating LinkOutfor print and electronic journal collections of a library.  Topics includethe Submission Utility, displayed library information, entering and updatingholdings, library icons, My NCBI, and accessing additional free full-textmaterials. Attendees are encouraged to bring their questions and concerns toshare with the class.

Participants will be able to

·  Understandand be able to describe LinkOut and its relationship to electronic journalcollections

·  Focusthe LinkOut account with individual library identity information, electronicholdings information, and an icon

·  Includefree web-based titles in library collections

Target Audience: Anyhealth professionals, health sciences librarians, or students who needs accessto information

Estimated time for workshop: 5 hours

2.     Mobile resources for health professionals, Speaker:Sa’ad Laws from Cornel University, Qatar

 

This tutorial will focus on the emerging topic of mobile resourcesin the clinical and health fields. Participants will be introduced to how thesedevices and applications have developed and affected the health care industry.

The tutorial will focus on evaluating health related apps. Multipleapps will be demonstrated. The instructor will explain how devices and apps canbe used within a clinical setting and specifically within an Evidence BasedMedicine framework. Finally, the instructor will share with various tips andtricks with attendees for using their devices more efficiently. 

TargetAudience: Any health professionals, healthsciences librarians, or students who needs access to information.

Estimated timefor workshop: 3hrs

 

3.     Evidence-Based Change, Speaker:  Pentesco-Gilbert, Deborah , EditorialDirector, Health Sciences Cochrane Journals Editorial.

 

       This workshop aims to enable delegatesto use evidence to make informed decisions about         

        health care and to develop a strategyfor practice change in a health care setting

4.     Planning the Future, Speaker: Ellen Sayed, Directorof the Distributed eLibrary at Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar.

 

Workshop purpose: Introduceand discuss the strategic planning process.

 

Workshop description: This half-day workshop will introduce participants tothe process and components of the strategic planning process in a librarysetting. Problem-based group activities are included throughout. 

 

Learning objective: At theend of this workshop participants will be sufficiently familiar with thestrategic planning process to develop one for their own library.

v Tutorials

 

1.Changing the Focus of Medicine                                                                                               .                                                                                              

Instructors: Holly Ann Burt, MLIS, AHIP & AffraAl Shamsi, Professional Training Chairperson, SLA/AGC.

This tutorial examines the patient safetymovement across time and around the world, with a specific focus on theimportance of librarians and information specialists within this changingfield.  Topics covered include laws focused on patient safety, definitionsand issues related to medical error, available resources and focusedorganizations, and advocacy by librarians in every field.


Participants will be able to:

·  Understandthe historical movement and impact of patient safety

·  Identifypatient safety issues and points of contact specific to individual institutions

·  Formulatemethods to effectively advocate for safer healthcare

2. PubMed: Expert Searching Clinic                                                                                 

Instructor: Holly Ann Burt, MLIS,AHIP 

Designed for intermediate and advanced PubMed searchers, this hands-on tutorialfocuses on the effective use of PubMed features.  Topics addressed in thiscourse include: recent changes to PubMed; formulating, revising and refiningcomplex search strategies; using special features such as subsets, search tags,filters, My NCBI options, pre-formatted searches, and Clinical Queries; andaccessing related databases including MeSH and the NLM Catalog. Attendees areencouraged to contribute past and present difficult searches to discuss withthe class.


Participants will be able to:

·  DiscussPubMed applications

·  Understandand demonstrate advanced searching techniques

·  Becomefamiliar with tools to update skills and for lifelong learning

v Training the trainer

Preparingqualified trainers in each institute is a key element in better utilization forthe resources and help creating informed literate users. We offer a certified“Training the Trainer” programm for preparing qualified trainers on the majormedical resources (OVID, SPRINGER, BMJ, Wiley, Oxford & MICROMEDEX)to provide trainees with the basic understanding of these resources and supportthem with the ability to teach others on how to search and utilize theseresources professionally.
