About the Library
Brief History

The ROYAL Hospital Central Medical Library happens to be the central store-house on which Hospitals and Health centers can depend for library facilities and is jointly funded by the MOH and the Royal Hospital Health Services. Established in 1970, it is the oldest medical library in Oman. It provides resources and services to support the clinical, research, teaching and learning needs of staff and students in the Faculty of Health Sciences and MOH staff.

It has been playing a very important part in the dissemination of scientific information and in the furtherance of research for more than quarter of a century.

Library Hours:

Saturday -Wednesday: 7.30 a.m.-8 p.m.

Library Role:

Library Location:

The Royal Hospital Library is located on the First floor- to the left from the main door of Royal Hospital.

Library Building:

All services and facilities are located on one level of the Library. This level contains the return chute, combined loans and information desk, main computer area with network printer,, reference and video collections, book collection and the journal collections, new book and periodical display area, photocopier/printer and the staff work area. The computers can be used for access to the library catalogue, databases and the internet, word-processing, e-mail and computer-assisted learning packages.


LIBRARY HOLDINGS & SERVICES

There are over 5000 books, and nearly 200 books are added every year. It subscribes to 122 current Journals, and the library Holding is about 201 popular periodicals. The Library possesses a special collection of MOH & WHO publications. A good number of audiovisual aids material such as videos of lectures, Educational, and MCQ Video Tapes, slides and CDs are available.

Library membership: is offered to all Royal Hospital Staff, Residents and Interns posted to the Royal Hospital Others may use the library for reference only.

Circulation: 3 books can be borrowed for 3 weeks plus 2 journals for a week at a time. This can be extended for the same period if the item is not placed on-hold. A fine is levied to late return of library materials.

Reference Services

The Library continues to provide guidance in the use of relevant medical websites, databases and electronic journals through the Database search and ILL services. It opens a wider horizon of medical information resources by introducing the new reference services of:

Continuous Medical Educational Information Service (CMEIS) Evidence Based Medicine Reference Service (EBMRS) Internet-Literacy group service Library Publications:
